Posted by dandriff on Saturday February 11, 2006@12:58PM

Here are some of the more recent articles I found by searching Google News.

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060211/NEWS06/602110352 [4]
This article is actually similar to one I read back in 2001 during the first semester I attended BYU. It was about a young kid who'd been taking Ritalin for years who died suddenly. When they autopsied him, his chest resembled someone who had been abusing amphetamines.

http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/newsAr.. [5]
The panel was 8-7 with 1 abstention, so it was pretty much divided down the middle.

http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1158901,00.html [6]
``"Mothers around the country now think they are playing Russian Roulette with their kids," says psychiatrist Edward Hallowell, author of three popular books on ADHD, including Delivered From Distraction.``
This article discusses the FDA's current mentality being that further studies on this class of drug are required before any real conclusions are drawn.
The figures regarding the number of people who are prescribed this family of drug in the US. Estimate is ~4 million people total.
``An estimated 2.5 million children and 1.5 million adults currently take these stimulants, which include the popular brands Adderall, Concerta and Metadate.``

http://www.guardian.co.uk/frontpage/story/0,,1707535,00.html [7]
``There have been 51 deaths among children and adults taking drugs for ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in the US since 1999.``
This is the highest figure I've run across so far. All the other reports were around 16 or 21 (although this is the first one to say what year it's talking about).
``In the US, doctors write 2m prescriptions for ADHD drugs for children every month and 1m for adults.``
This figure is lower than the last article. Estimate is ~3 million total. Just goes to show the press doesn't necessarily do their research properly. I would stick with the estimate given by the Times, as they are a more credible source, but now we only know that the actual figure is somewhere between 2 and 5 million people prescribed the drug in the US.

http://www.newsinferno.com/archives/823 [8]
``All of this controversy was prompted by data that showed that widely prescribed ADHD drugs like Ritalin may be lined to as many as 25 deaths that occurred between 1999 and 2003. Of these deaths, 19 involved children. In addition, the FDA was advised of 54 cases involving serious cardiovascular problems like heart attacks, strokes, hypertension, heart palpitations and arrhythmias in both adults and children taking these medications.``
This news agency says there have been 54 'incidents' (not necessarily death, presumably) from 1999-2003. Once again this is slighty different than reported by The Guardian, especially since it only goes to 2003, whereas The Guardian implied that they were reporting from 1999-present.
``There is also the open issue of another 26 deaths between 1969 and 2003 in medicated ADHD patients involving suicide, intentional overdose, drowning, heat stroke, and underlying diseases.``
Not necessarily terribly relevant to this, but interesting nonetheless.

http://www.hamiltonspectator.com/NASApp/cs/ContentS.. [9]
``"Anything that makes you think isn't bad, but it shouldn't make you afraid," said Dr. Ross Allega, Hamilton family physician.``
--
Bibliography

[1] McMillen, M., (2005-02-15).
